Job Summary

The Cost Accountant is responsible for planning, studying, and collecting data to determine costs of business activities such as raw material purchases, labor, and overhead. This position will analyze actual manufacturing costs and prepare periodic reports comparing standard costs to actual production costs, supporting the management team in making strategic financial decisions.

Duties/Responsibilities

1. Develop and maintain cost accounting system, documentation, and records.


2. Analyze manufacturing costs and prepare regular reports comparing standard costs to actual production costs.


3. Monitor inventory transactions and reconcile inventory accounts.


4. Assist in month-end close of the General Ledger and cost accounting entries.


5. Support budgeting and forecasting activities by providing cost data and analysis.


6. Conduct physical inventories and monitor the cycle count program.


7. Analyze changes in product design, raw materials, manufacturing methods, or services provided to determine effects on cost.


8. Provide cost estimates for new products and product modifications.


9. Ensure compliance with internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures.


10. Collaborate with operations and engineering to improve cost accuracy and operational efficiency.

Required Skills/Abilities

1. Excellent attention to detail and strong analytical/problem-solving skills.


2. Ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders.


3. Knowledge of GAAP and SOX compliance.

Education And Experience

1. Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or CMA preferred).


2. 7+ years of cost accounting experience in a manufacturing environment.


3. Strong knowledge of cost accounting principles and practices.


4. Experience with ERP systems (Syteline or Made2Manage experience a plus).


5. Experience with standard costing systems.


6. Advanced Excel skills; proficiency in data analysis and financial modeling.

The employee frequently is required to sit and walk. The employee is occasionally required to bend and stop, push and pull, reach above shoulder level, kneel, squat, or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Exposure to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles is possible. The noise level is usually moderate.
